First Step : Do you have Java installed on your computer?

You can either try visiting the link below to find the answer.

Sorry you need to have Java Enabled browser to view this applet.
If you did not have java installed and cannot see the above applet then visit the Sun website to get Java.

Firefox browser users, please check you are using the latest version of Java.

You may have to restart your computer after installing java.
If after you have installed java and rebooted then the applet does not display then try out the help on the following page
Enable Java software through your Web browser

Second Step : Using the Chat Interface

Assuming that java is now installed and working on your computer.
When you visit one of the java chat pages you will get a popup window asking for permission to run the applet.
You must allow the applet to run otherwise you will not be able to use the java chat.
If you clicked the wrong button and disallowed the applet then close all your browser windows and next time you visit the page it should ask again.

Once the java applet has loaded, you can now change the Nick Name field to something suitable and then press the Connect Now! button.
The applet should start to connect to the chat server first and then the chat room itself.

If you get this far and still have problems then you should pay attention to any messages the applet produces as these are a good indication why you cannot connect.
It should only take a minute or two for the applet to connect to the server and then the room.

Connection Issues

If you are behind a firewall or any kind of router then you might need to open certain ports in able to chat using the java applet or indeed any IRC software.

Use the instructions for your hardware or ask your system administrator to open TCP port 6667 then try again.

Some Educational Institutions or work places may block any IRC access, if this is the case then unfortunately you cannot use the chat.
There are ways around this but they are beyond the scope of this page. Hint, search google for psybnc.

Known Issues with Java Chat Pages

Windows

• Java chat applet only officially supports web browsers Netscape 4.08, Internet Explorer 4.0 or later versions
• It may work with Mozilla, Firefox, Opera along with relevant Java
  Firefox browser users, please check you are using the latest version of Java.
• Windows XP does not include any Java by default so you have to either install Sun Java VM or MS Java VM from Windows Update site
  It is reported that Windows XP SP1 includes Java.
• If your having problems with Java, try using Sun Java VM
• You can also Search Google for Microsoft Java

• Upgrade your Java VM to the latest version
• Try using the beta version of the applet
• It is recommended to use OS X as both Netscape and IE should work
• For version 2.7 of the applet, Netscape 4.7 on OS 9 is no longer supported, you should use IE 5 on OS 9 (with Java Security option set to Unrestricted Access)
• Under OS 9 it is recommended you use Netscape 4.7 as using IE involves changing the Java Security option to Unrestricted Access
• The javascript functions (drop down lists below chat window) may not work under Mac

• Netscape 7 uses JDK 1.3 plugin by default and will crash in some systems (Redhat 7.2 for example), workaround is to replace the old Java plugin with the JDK1.4 java runtime plugin
• If your using linux then you are probably better off using a proper IRC client
